Insight Exchange Illustration Sets - Listening

LISTENING

Listening to lived experience insights is essential. In the 'listening' menu you can explore the lived experience insights listed below. The insights include victims’ experiences of, responses to, and resistance against violence and abuse. The insights are described below. Each link will take you to the relevant landing page where you will find the related insights, reflections and examples.

The perpetration of violence and abuse is a human rights violation. Globally, Indigenous women face disproportional levels of violence due to past and present colonialisation of their lands and territories and ongoing racism. Women and girls are disproportionately impacted by violence and abuse. People who are Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex, Queer, Asexual+ Sistergirl, Brotherboy (LGBTIQA+SB) are also subjected to violence and abuse. We acknowledge that violence and abuse is not only experienced by individuals, but also by groups of people and populations facing threat, harm and violence on mass. The safety and dignity of individuals and communities is undermined by armed conflict, genocide, organised crime, poverty, disasters, and more. All people, families and communities are worthy of dignity, respect and safety.

The insights revealed in Insight Exchange materials are not representative of all people, families or communities. The use of gendered terms reflect the descriptions directly used in the insights featured.

Our thanks to every person who has generously shared lived expertise of violence and abuse to inform and strengthen social, service and systemic responses. We acknowledge that despite our best efforts to listen to lived experiences of violence and abuse, we can never fully understand all that a person’s experiences mean to them now or through their life. We understand that lived and living experiences can never be fully represented in language or any other form.
