Creating Collectively

CREATING COLLECTIVELY

‘Creating Collectively’ is a description we use to describe how the conceptualising, making and sharing of insights and materials involves many people in different parts and in different ways.

We are creating collectively through continuous listening and responding.

We use the term ‘creating’ to describe actions that involve generating, organising and reorganising insights and concepts and the ways these are conveyed and evolved in the contexts where they are shared. We use the term ‘collectively’ to encompass the range of individuals involved. Each with varied subject matter experiences and skills, including (but not limited to) lived and learned experiences of violence and abuse. ‘Collectively’ describes the doing of actions enacted with others. Our use of ‘collectively’ does not: (1) guarantee what value it will hold (2) act as a representative entity (3) assert to be a movement to belong to (4) seek to achieve consensus as a goal or an outcome. We are creating collectively, not as a model or theory, but as a description of intentional actions.

These actions can be described in focus areas (see the series below), with no defined beginning or end to understanding, value or utility.

The way we value design, and designing together, is central in our way of working. This document serves to share our design commitments and a point in time picture of who we work with (as an example) and how. In this document we explain the principles and process we use in our communication and design. We also outline the way we work to create booklets, animations and modules/videos.
